Ross Lovegrove’s car of the future
鋺 #1 / Brighton 2011
copper, 80mm x 80mm x 36mm
“Supreme mastery of an extraordinarily rich range of tone colour. That is, the fusion of dynamic range and timbre.” - Rodolfo Celletti, 1970
The “鋺” series is inspired by the voice of soprano Maria Callas (1923-1977)
#1 : Versatile in timbre, excellent in technique. Flaws in the voice became more obvious in this period however. Some argue that the intensity of her singing and the intense recording sessions during this period of time had caused the harp vocal decline. Wobble and occasional cracks in the voice appeared as early as 1957.
‘Casta Diva’
Bellini Lamp series / Brighton 2012
Having Italian opera composer Vincenzo Bellini’s musical style as fundamental guidelines, each design of the series represents a specific piece of operatic material by Bellini. Factors such as lyrical texts, composition structure and characteristics of the music were taken into consideration.
“She cuts the sacred mistletoe; the priestesses gather it in wicker baskets. The moon shines forth in all her splendor. All prostrate themselves.”
Norma :
Casta Diva, che inargenti
Queste sacre antiche piante,
A noi volgi il bel sembiante
Senza nube e senza vel.
Tempra, o Diva
Tempra tu de’ cori ardenti,
Tempra ancor lo zelo audace,
Spargi in terra quella pace
Che regnar tu fai nel ciel.
“Sediziose voci”
Bellini Lamp series / Brighton 2012
Having Italian opera composer Vincenzo Bellini’s musical style as fundamental guidelines, each design of the series represents a specific piece of operatic material by Bellini. Factors such as lyrical texts, composition structure and characteristics of the music were taken into consideration.
“Enter NORMA, with her priestesses, her head bound with vervain, and a golden sickle in her hand. She mount the Druidial stone, and turns her eyes around with anger. Al are silent.”
Norma :
Sediziose voci! Voci di guerra avvi chi alzar si attenta Presso all’ara del Dio? V’ha chi presume dettar responsi alla veggente Norma, e di Roma affrettar il fato arcano? … Ei non dipende da potere umano.
Billie / Brighton 2012
“[…] During the show, someone sent Holiday a box of gardenias. “My old trademark,” Holiday said. “I took them out of box and fastened them smack to the side of my head without even looking twice.” There was a hatpin in the gardenias and Holiday, unknowingly, stuck the needle deep into the side of her head. “I didn’t feel anything until the blood started rushing down in my eyes and ears,” she said. After the third curtain call, Holiday passed out.”
- William Dufty, ‘Lady Sings the Blues’ 1956, p. 168-169
Project inspired by jazz legend Billie Holiday
“Billie Holiday’s burned voice
had as many shadows as lights,
a mournful candelabra against a sleek piano,
the gardenia her signature under that ruined face.”
- Rita Dove, poet
